Abstract: Zelia Nuttall, Harvard Museum, in her book, The Fundamental Principles of Old and New World Civilizations (1901), proposed the astronomical basis of the Swastika symbol formation. This has to do with the seasonal positions of the Ursa Major constellation with respect to the Pole Star. My lecture proposes its link with the Indus civilization and explains the non-natural, inverted-V shape of the tail of the Indus Makara (Crocodile) sign. The tail is shown in top, left or right positions of the Makara sign in the Indus script. I always wonder why the Makara sign's tail is a sharp-V shape, and the seasonal Ursa Major positions resolve the question. Also, there are Swastika-shaped cist burials in Tamil country during the megalithic. The Makara sign in the Post-Harappan period gets associated with Varuṇa in the Vedic texts after the language shift in North India, and in Tamil Tolkāppiyam.

This lecture in Connecticut is a pre-run for the 11th World Tamil Conference organized by IATR.

அன்பு அண்ணன் முனைவர் நாக கணேசன் தமிழ் மேடையை இலாவகமாகக் கையாண்டார்.  நானும் வாணியும் நேரில் சென்று கனிட்டிக்கெட்டு மிடில்டவுன் கோவிலரங்கத்தில் இலக்கியச் சொற்பொழிவைக் கண்டு களித்தோம்.  சிந்து சமவெளி முத்திரையைப் பற்றி தான் கண்டாய்ந்தவற்றை அழகுத் தமிழில் கதைபோல் சொல்லி அனைவரின் கவனத்தையும் ஒன்னரை மணி நேரம் ஈர்த்து வைத்திருந்தார். ஆய்வு ஏன்? எதற்கு? எப்படி? என்ற மூன்று கேள்விகளுக்கு பதிலுடன் திரும்பி வருமாறு செம்மையாக அமைந்திருந்தது. முத்திரையில் இருப்பது கங்கையில் இருந்த முதலை என்று அழகாக நிறுவியிருக்கார்.
நாசா விண்வெளி ஆய்வு மையத்தில் முன்னணி அறிஞராக விளங்கி தமிழுக்கும் தமிழருக்கும் பெருமை சேர்ப்பவர். கருத்தில் தெளிவும் ஆழ-அகல விட்டம் கண்டவர். கதைபோல் பேசப் பேசக் கேட்டுக்கொண்டே இருக்கலாம். ஒளிப்படங்களுடன் பேசியிருந்தது மிகவும் சிறப்பு. 

ஞாயிறு மதியம் நன்றாக கழிந்தது. கனெட்டிக்கட்டு தமிழ் சங்கம் ஏற்பாடு செய்திருந்தனர். இப்படியான சான்றுகளுடைய மகனை ஈன்ற தமிழ்த்தாய் பெருமையும் பேருவகையும் கொண்டிருப்பாள்;  ஐயமில்லாமல் மொழிவோம் என்று மொழிந்த விழாக் குழுவினருக்கும் ஏற்பாடு செய்திருந்த தோழர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் நன்றி!

BTW, Iravatham Mahadevan, during Jallikkattu protests, explained a buffalo seal
